Contributions to gender equality
Through its three strategic programs —Economic and Food Justice, Climate Justice and Resilience, and Identity, Rights, and Gender— and in collaboration with 44 partner organizations, CARE Guatemala impacted the lives of 227,983 people, prioritizing women, girls, and youth.
Key Strategies for Impact
Strengthening Alliances and Local Networks:
CARE closely collaborated with feminist organizations, young women, and Indigenous groups to ensure that the voices and needs of vulnerable communities remain central to interventions. These alliances enabled the implementation of sustainable projects addressing gender-based violence prevention, sexual and reproductive rights, and economic autonomy.Focus on Gender Equality:
CARE’s strategies place gender equality as a transversal axis. Processes of inclusive masculinities were integrated to foster respect for women’s rights and challenge patriarchal norms, promoting inclusive and equitable environments.Community Training and Empowerment:
Strategies like the Field and Business Schools (FFBS) have strengthened women’s skills in sustainable agriculture, income generation, and food security. These initiatives enhance women’s active participation in their communities and foster economic autonomy.Climate Resilience and Risk Management:
CARE supported the creation and strengthening of Local and Municipal Disaster Reduction Committees (COLRED and COMRED), mostly led by women, who now play a crucial role in mitigating climate change effects and responding to emergencies.
Key Achievements
Economic Autonomy:
Women like Olga Sis have transformed their lives by participating in training programs and accessing productive resources, generating sustainable incomes, and strengthening their communities.Community Health and Rights:
Midwives such as Donata Zepeda lead prenatal care and health promotion processes from a culturally relevant perspective, enhancing the well-being of women and children in rural areas.Violence Prevention:
87% of the implemented projects address gender-based violence, promoting significant changes in social norms and ensuring safe environments for women and girls.Access to Resources and Water Management:
Local and municipal gender equality and water access plans were implemented, contributing to water security and strengthening women’s capacities in resource management.
